Works for Me Wednesday ~ Homemade Valentine

Ok, so I know that next week is the official WFMW Valentine Edition, but I just couldn’t help myself. Hopefully I will have something Valentine related to share next week too!

 

I can’t take credit for the idea because I found it in the February issue of the Family Fun magazine. The above picture is actually the picture from the website and you can click on it to go there! I could not resist making these cute Valentines for my daughters kindergarten class. They were super easy albeit a little time consuming, but oh so much fun. I hate to say that my husband and I did these Monday night while my daughter was asleep. But, we did save some for her to make. Here it is with the step by step instructions!

 

What you need: different colors of broken crayons (taking the paper off and breaking the crayons took the longest time) A tip: when removing the paper from the crayons we found it easiest to make a slit with a knife down the entire length of the crayon and just peel the whole wrapper off!, heart shaped muffin tin (found mine at Target & it is silicone so I needed a baking pan for ease of getting in & out of the oven), cooling rack. Preheat your oven to 250 degrees Farenheit.

 

Ok, once you have your crayons paper free and broken you will need to fill the muffin tin with the pieces. Make sure you fill them to the brim because they will be melting down.

Now that the tin is full (if you are using silicone make sure you place it on the baking sheet) you can put it in the oven to melt. This took about 20 minutes for us, but the Family Fun site suggest 10-15 minutes. You’ll just have to judge for yourselves.

 

Once they are melted remove them from the oven and place on a cooling rack. This is tricky with the silicone because the crayon wants to run out, but it can be done with a little finesse! 🙂 You need to let them cool completely before trying to remove them from the tin. We put them in the refrigerator to cool and it took approximately fifteen minutes, possibly longer. I tried to get one out too soon and it cracked, but I just put them back in the refrigerator and you can hardly see the crack (we’ll be keeping that one)! Just check out how adorable they are!

Don’t you just love those? I can’t wait to give them out! The kids (I hope) are going to love them! Who wouldn’t love a multicolored crayon in the shape of a heart? My hubby and I had fun coloring with the cracked one after they were all done!!! 😉 Works for Me!
